Dash's Donair

Well believe it or not, I have never had a donair before.  Yes that is true.  And neither has my husband.  So after I seen this recipe I figured it looked easy enough, so time to bite the bullet and give it a try.  Needless to say they were a big hit!  Our son was home for the weekend and I couldn't believe he ate them and even more, liked them!  (he is fussy).  My husband also liked them and myself also.  I sound surprised, because I am, so easy and the taste is the same (as my son says).  So here goes hope you enjoy:  The recipe comes from allrecipes.com.

• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon ground oregano
• 1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
• 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
• 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

• 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
• 1 pound ground beef

• 1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
• 3/4 cup white sugar
• 2 teaspoons garlic powder
• 4 teaspoons white vinegar, or as needed

  

        

                        

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a cup or small bowl, mix together the salt, oregano, flour, black pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
2. Place the ground beef in a large bowl, and use your hands to blend in the spice mixture. If you want the smooth texture of meat that you see in a real donair shop, you must do this in a steel mixing bowl and on a sturdy surface. Pick up the meat, and throw it down with force about 20 times, kneading it after each throw. This also helps the meat hold together better when you slice it.
3. Form the meat into a loaf, and place it on a broiler pan. If you do not have one, a baking sheet will do.
4. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes in the preheated oven, turning the loaf over about half way through. This will ensure even cooking. This cuts better if you chill the meat overnight before slicing.
5. To make the donair sauce, mix together the evaporated milk, sugar and garlic powder in a medium bowl. Gradually whisk in the white vinegar, adding 1 teaspoon at a time, until thickened to your desired consistency.

So I copied and pasted the recipe for you, that saved me a lot of time.  Now I will show you the progress.

Put the ground beef in a steel bowl like they asked.

These are the mixture of spices used.

The slamming part into the bowl 20 times was fun LOL.

Shape it into a loaf, and put on a roasting pan.

At the half way point, take a spatula and flip.

I made it in the morning, so it could have all day to cool in the refridgerator.

Now on to the donair sauce.  I was totally amazed and surprised at how good this turned out. And I used all 4 tsp of vinegar.

Whisk in the vinegar.

Now on to a side dish.  We were at Costco and got some Caesar salad supplies. Which consist of romaine lettuce, Renee's Caesar salad dressing, croutons, did some bacon up in my mini chopper and parmesan slices (Sobeys).

Cut up the lettuce and wash.

Dinner is served!  I just added the amount of ingredients I wanted in the salad, put a little dressing and done.  My donair may not look to big, but it is my first one and I was taking it slow.  I don't like anything think anyway.  I had mine on  flatbread which I like and the other two had tortilla wraps. Well that was dinner tonight, and the boys had seconds :)
